The importance of social media can never be over emphasized, but it tends to be destructive when it becomes an addiction. Many students tends to get distracted while in class or studying when they hear that ping sound come from their phone. 90% of the overall students find it very difficult or impossible to resist the urge to repeatedly check their social media notifications when it pings while in class.

It is so important for we all as students to make diligent decisions to change such a habit of social media addiction because this isn’t just a sickness that has affected only the weakest of students but has also affected even the best of us and has gotten this current generation tagged “The Social Media Generation”.  Keeping your phone at home while in school can really help but isn’t the best remedy to this issue because even while your phone is at home, your mind can still get distracted thinking about it while lectures goes on.

Realize That Time Is A Valuable Asset That Needs To Be Rightfully Utilized

Have you asked yourself why most students have to do their school assignments very late at night against submission the next day ? . These things happens frequently all because we spend our precious time scrolling through social media newsfeed and chatting endlessly.

It mostly starts with the statement “Let me watch just one video” or “let me just reply this particular chat”, and we all know how these decisions ends up. Time really flies so fast when we get carried away with those unending social media contents which where actually tailored to waste our time.

To come out of this addiction,  you really need to work your butts out, first thing is to discover what you enjoy doing asides social media, then find a way to invest your time on it. As much as possible, do away with social media, you can achieve that by downloading lockdown apps like FREEDOM and FLIPD; Focus & Study Timer which can temporarily restrict your access to social media.

Focus more on reding with your phone, doing other productive stuffs like writing and do it for a long period of time and watch yourself get connected with some other activities.

Get A New Hobby

In a bid to detach yourself from this disease called “Social Media Addiction”, i advice you get a new hobby which isn’t particularly technology related so as to not lead you back to your gadget.  When you begin this social media detachment exercise, you will find yourself having much free time that if not well utilized will make you fall back to the addiction you’re trying to escape from.

Reduce Your Online Presence

If you need to quickly tackle the issue at hand, you really need to limit those online presence, limit the amount of social media notifications you get. Only activate the important ones, because the more notifications we get, the more frequently we feel to check to check our phones and that’s going against what we’re tackling. There are so many apps we frequently use that isn’t so important to us, if you have such apps on your phone, i advice you uninstall them all and only keep the important ones.

Evaluate Yourself

You know yourself batter than anyone else and know one can evaluate yourself more than you would do. So, take your time asks yourself some questions like “What role does social media play in your life? and “of what important is it to you?” Do you use social media as a means of having fun?, chatting, advertising or inspiration?,  When you consider all these questions, you will get a clear answer to the importance of each app to you and that would help in your detachment quest.

This is really never going to be an easy task, it will require excessive willpower and patience to pull through. But if you’re someone who cares about your personal growth and wants it so bad, then you have to give you all to make it happen.

As students, it’s quite understandable that we tend to turn to social media for so many reasons, but make your reasons meaningful and productive and while doing so, don’t get carried away by the frequent video pop ups, be brave enough to stay focused and trust me when i say “THE END WOULD SURELY JUSTIFY THE MEANS”
